Twenty-four-year-old Iris Mittenaere from France was crowned Miss Universe 2017,
making her the second Miss France to ever win the contest after Christiane Martel, and the
second European to wear the crown since 2002. In fact, Oksana Federova from Russia, who
resigned from her role as Miss Universe, was crowned back in 2002. Miss Haiti, Raquel
Pelissier, was named first runner-up, and Miss Colombia, Andrea Tovar, was second runner-up. Mittenaere, who celebrated her 24th birthday a few days before being crowned,
in northern France and is pursuing a degree in dental surgery, which is what inspired her to use her platform to promote oral hygiene. Aside from dental school, she enjoys extreme sports such as bungee bumping, hang gliding, and skydiving. In addition, she enjoys cooking French food which she often shares on social media, and traveling.
As the new Miss Universe, Mittenaere’s mission is to keep on with her awareness
campaign for dental and oral care all around the world, and to advocate for children’s rights and access to education. “Beauty shines from the inside out. Be kind hearted, believe in moral values, have confidence in myself, but also admit my flaws, that is the way to work on myself and become confidently beautiful,” was Mittenaere’s response when she was asked what quality makes someone confidently beautiful.
